University lecturers spend their time designing courses, teaching students and conducting research in their chosen area of expertise. Other tasks include designing and marking assessments, supervising research and post-graduate students, attending conferences, writing research proposals and reports and reviewing the work of peers. Professionals in this field are expert in their chosen area and almost always have post-graduate qualifications at a masters or doctoral level, which would normally require an honours degree. They must be good communicators and have a passion for their area of interest as they often work long hours for extended periods of time.

Lecturers usually are employed by universities either full-time, on contract or as part of grant monies. Employment opportunities are competitive, particularly with prestigious universities and having worked or studied at overseas institutions is highly regarded.
