This course provides students with the opportunity to:
1. develop and demonstrate an understanding of ethical theories, and key concepts such as moral agency relevant to professional practice in education;
2. discuss ethical dilemmas, tensions, problems and issues relevant to a variety of roles in the sector;
3. critically analyse codes of practice, policies and professional ethics in education; and
4. formulate and articulate a coherent and informed response to an ethical problem or question that dialogues with a range of ethical theories, decision making models and a modern context.

The following list indicates indicative course content:
* Introduction to the field of professional ethics
* An introduction to metaethical theory concerning the evaluation of moral action
* Moral theories such as situation ethics, agent-based ethics and action-based ethics relevant to educational practice
* The psychology of morality
* The ethics of belief
* Notions of moral agency
* Ethical issues such as those concerning the roles of the teacher in the modern context of high accountability
* Critical analysis of existing codes of ethics
* Ethical communication and negotiation of difference.
