Acting Coaches focus on teaching or tutoring highly advanced concepts, such as emotional work, and the technical side of acting to actors. This is done to improve the essential framework within which instinct, talent and creativity thrive. Acting Coaches empower their students to become "masters" of their own instrument (i.e. themselves), often assisting students to use their real feelings to portray roles rather than facilitating the external falsification of them. Acting Coaches need to have knowledge of, and experience in acting technique and theory in a variety of mediums, such as theatre, opera, variety, and film/tv. Various techniques which are often concentrated on include dialogue, emotional, on-camera and audition technique, and script and scene analysis. Many coaches begin by coaching drama students, but may move on to film and stage work by reputation and networking.
