Bioinformatics is a combination of biology and statistics; it marries mathematics, statistics and information technology to obtain useful information from large and complex biological datasets and develop computing and statistical methodology and algorisms. Bioinformaticians work with organisations, public, private, or government to advance areas such as drug development, diagnostics and disease identification and management.
Bioinformaticians generally need to have post graduate level qualifications in a science field and/or a statistics or mathematics related area. They need to be able to work well in teams, have advanced knowledge in experimental methodology and research techniques, excellent analytical skills, good communication and computer skills.
