Business development managers research, identify and explore new business opportunities for their organisation. This may mean identifying new markets, attracting new clients or leading product development. Individuals employed in this position usually have excellent communication skills, are confident and resourceful, have extensive knowledge of relevant markets and are good at both negotiating and selling their ideas. Experience in people management is highly regarded as business development managers are often required to lead teams. Employment opportunities exist in specialist industries, such manufacturing but also where the product being developed is a service, like financial planning or marketing. While postgraduate qualifications are always well regarded, for this position, candidates with proven experience in either development or in the relevant industry itself are highly sought-after.
