Economic or social statisticians are interested in gathering and analysing socio-economic data and identifying and describing the trends between variables. They are employed primarily by the Australian Bureau of Statistics but also research organisations and centres for social studies. The work of statisticians in this field is utilised to help design and evaluate policy and legislation in many areas such as welfare and taxation. Data on the economic state of industries such as agriculture is also formulated and used to predict growth, allocate funding and inform economic and trade policies.
While mathematical and statistical skills are essential for this line of work, a good understanding of economics, commerce and the humanities through complementary studies is also important. Meticulous attention to detail and the ability to effectively communicate findings and describe trends are also essential skills.
