Family lawyers deal primarily with divorce and custody issues. They may also be involved with cases relating to adoption, surrogacy, child support, property and possessions after divorce as well as family violence and child abuse. As such, lawyers practicing in this area often liaise with support agencies such as DOCS and may seek advice from health professionals such as psychologists and paediatricians. Family lawyers work with extremely delicate and emotional issues as well as with children, so require sensitivity and an understanding of welfare issues. Individuals in this profession sometimes undertake studies in areas such as social work while others have more of an interest in financial issues surrounding division of assets, and may focus their studies in this area.
