Gallery Managers effectively manage and promote council museums and art gallery operations to ensure delivery of exhibitions and public programs in an attempt to increase interest and appreciation of visual art and historical artifacts. Organisational tasks revolve around financial responsibilities including securing grant funds, planning and policy development and implementation, staffing matters and developing, implementing and managing quality exhibitions and relationships with patrons, artists, the community and businesses. Gallery Managers also need to have good people, organisational, communication, negotiation and decision making skills, be able to work as part of a team and have initiative and innovation.
To become a Gallery Manager, relevant university degree qualifications in fields such as creative arts, history, or art management are required with post graduate qualifications being more desirable, as well as relevant experience. This can be gained in positions such as a curator or art or museum administrator, with some management and customer service experience.
