Instructional Designers are in charge of the design, development, implementation and evaluation of programs designed to improve learning and training outcomes in a wide variety of areas. Instructional Designers often complete the following tasks:

  • Work alongside and liaise with educational experts such as teachers and lecturers from various fields to gain information regarding learning in specific areas.
  • Design specific training and learning resources such as competency based learning, computer based training (CBT), distance education modules, online learning and workshops for organisations.
  • Design assessment regimes and develop syllabi to ensure organisational outcomes are achieved.

Instructional Designers must posses excellent written communication skills, analytical skills, computer skills in Microsoft Office, especially MS word MS excel and web based resources, as well as highly developed skills in documentation and interpersonal communication. Successful candidates often have an eye for detail and have outstanding grammar and expression.

An instructional designer will usually have a minimum educational requirement in Bachelor of Arts, Human Resource Development, , Education,  Psychology or linguistics. A Master of Arts (MA) or a Master of Science (MS) degree or further education in the design of instructional materials, learning and development is often requested. Some industries may require further education requirements in a topic such as biology, medicine or engineering to assure that the designer is familiar with the content they will be working with.
