Music directors conduct choirs, orchestras, bands, ensembles, opera companies and musical performances (either live or recorded). The role of the music director may include auditioning performers, directing rehearsals, and making arrangement adjustments (cuts to the score, transposing) when required.

Music directors also work in television studios, radio studios and institutions such as churches, colleges or schools. In these settings, music directors are responsible for the overall selection, planning and implementation of music programs.

Music directors may become specialists in a particular musical genre such as popular, classical and jazz music. Tertiary qualifications in music and experience are generally required.
