Obstetricians and Gynaecologists provide care for women from adolescence through reproductive years and beyond. Obstetricians and Gynaecologists work closely with GP’s and Midwives to provide comprehensive care for all aspects of women’s health. This includes supporting healthy women and babies through pregnancy and birth as well as those facing fertility issues. This support extends to both physical well-being and the psychosocial aspects of pregnancy and childbirth, including facilitating the active involvement of women and partners in childbirth, family planning issues and counselling in relation to prenatal loss and disabilities in the newborn.

A qualification in Obstetrics and Gynaecology requires a degree in medicine as well as a further 6 or more years of specialised training. Opportunities are available in both large public hospitals and private practice.
