Pathology Assistant

Pathology assistants work under the supervision of a Pathologist to carry out the collection and examination of specimens such as blood and tissue. They are responsible for all preparation of samples excluding actual diagnosis. This work may involve tasks such as:

  • Preparation, description and dissection of samples
  • Organising and maintaining records of results
  • Taking blood samples from clients
  • Recording characteristics of samples (e.g. size, weight)

While a four-year biological science degree is usually sufficient for this type of work there are additional training courses and certificates that prepare biologists specifically for work in a pathology lab.
