Plant engineers coordinate the manufacturing activities in industrial plants. They provide technical engineering support to production workers and are involved in the design, construction, maintenance and modification of plant equipment and machinery. For example, a plant engineer may work in a food manufacturing factory inspecting processing equipment, conducting quality control assessments of products and preparing maintenance schedules for machinery.
Plant engineers may be employed directly by manufacturing plants or by consulting firms on a project-by-project basis. They often have full control over plant operations and therefore require strong interpersonal skills, good knowledge of mechanical, electrical and commercial practices and a high level of organisational skills.
Plant engineers typically require an undergraduate bachelor's degree in engineering, plus two or more years of experience in a plant or production environment.
