Procurement/sourcing managers are responsible for sourcing and acquiring specialist goods - usually for production and manufacturing. They are skilled negotiators who aim to acquire goods at the best possible price and in accordance with specified time frames and other requirements. A major part of this type of work is industry knowledge, which enables competitor analysis and the comparative evaluation of tenders. Procurement/sourcing managers also need to be responsive to external factors such as legislation, environmental and industrial relations issues, all of which can interfere with scheduling and production. In many ways this is a high responsibility position as entire production schedules can depend on successful acquisition of materials. Qualifications in supply chain management would be necessary for this type of role as would experience in business management, contracts administration and budgeting.
