Publishing distribution officers are generally employed by publishing companies to manage and organise the distribution of products such as books, magazines, DVD's and other types of texts. They are often responsible for maintaining relationships with the retail outlets that stock their products, allocating stock and orders, keeping records and accounts and providing information to clients on the features of products and particular promotions.

Their role requires strong administrative and organisational skills, good understanding of the sales and marketing strategies of the particular employer and a thorough knowledge of their product. A tertiary qualification is not necessarily essential for this type of work, though studies in the liberal arts are useful in developing general skills and potentially providing an understanding of the published works being distributed.
