Architecture Study Tour – St Denis to Gaudi
Date: 10–29 June, 2012
Location: Paris to Barcelona
In 2012, students have the opportunity to travel from Paris to Barcelona, for a thorough survey of a millennium of architectural history, from Gothic to 21st century post-modernism.
Begin in Paris, with the great Gothic cathedrals of St Denis, Notre-Dame in Paris and Notre-Dame in nearby Chartres. Over a full week in Paris follow the development of architecture through the French Renaissance, Enlightenment, Empire, 19th century avant-garde and 20th century modernism.
During a week in regional France, discover the rich heritage of the Romans in the Midi, the great Cluny Abbey and Tournus Cathedral in Burgundy, the architectural ensemble of Versailles, and modern and contemporary architecture in Lyon and Marseille.
No architectural study tour to France would be complete without getting to know and understand the great Le Corbusier, the pioneer of so much modern architecture. Visit and study his Villa Savoye, the Chapelle du Ronchamp and Unité d'Habitation and stay in his Convent of La Tourette.
Finish in the architecturally extraordinary city of Barcelona, featuring a Gothic heart juxtaposed with the flamboyant works of Gaudí and his contemporaries, and a wealth of 20th century masterpieces.

Construction Management 21st Anniversary Dinner

Venue: Newcastle City Hall
The Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment are proud to announce the 21st anniversary of the Construction Management degree.
To celebrate this important occasion the School of Architecture and Built Environment held a semi-formal gala dinner on Saturday 14 April 2012 at Newcastle City Hall.
The degree is celebrated as one of the most innovative building programs in the country and now has graduates working on every continent. Throughout its history, the construction management degree has pioneered distance and online delivery modes, problem-based learning, and is now one of the largest programs of its type in Australia.

Glenn Murcutt – ‘Architecture for Place’ exhibition
Date: 7 March – 25 March, 2012
Gallery hours: 12pm to 6pm, Wednesday to Saturday
Venue: University Gallery
Presented by the Architecture Foundation Australia, this exhibition features architecture and drawings by Glenn Murcutt, photography by Anthony Browell, and video documentary by Catherine Hunter and Bruce Inglis.
Murcutt is Australia’s most internationally recognised architect and Architecture for Place profiles a selection of his built work and current projects, through his drawings and his working methods. Browell’s photography captures the essence of Murcutt’s design: harmony between building and nature. The exhibition particularly focusses on Murcutt’s houses, private residences that are not open to visitors. With his focus on the sustainability of the natural environment, Murcutt’s works are at the forefront of contemporary architecture. They are eloquent in form and refined in detailing, but primarily concerned with bringing the qualities of the surrounding world into the daily experience of the occupants.
Pursuing an architecture that is rooted in Australia’s culture and its diverse climate and topography, Murcutt is also active internationally, teaching and lecturing as a Professor at Universities throughout the world.
Join Glenn Murcutt for the exhibition's opening on Wednesday 7 March from 5pm, which will be followed by Glenn Murcutt in conversation with Richard Leplastrier at 6.30pm in the Richardson Lecture Theatre RW149.
