Research expertise

My current research is aligned to my PhD topic: The development of an Innovative Field research Methodology for Natural History Illustrators - Is There Method in the Madness? Currently field research in the area of natural history illustration is ad hoc at best and the development of a cumulative new approach to data collection, interpretation and application would benefit natural science illustrators throughout the world. My research involves the development of an integrated new field research model that can be applied to the discipline of natural history illustration. By critically evaluating and extracting relevant methods from the diversity of techniques and methods currently practiced, I aim to arrive at a methodology that can assist illustrators to achieve consistently accurate data collection in the field and reliable results in their 'finished' artwork. This research is informed by completion of a research Masters in 2002 titled, The Art of Communicating Environmental Information, and over twenty years as a practicing illustrator and extensive experience in creative achievement including exhibition, consultancy and publication. To date I have had 22 solo and 22 group exhibitions as well as publications and research presentations.

The diverse nature of research in Natural History Illustration requires a multi-disciplinary approach to supervision and research. It is common for me to work with colleagues from the Earth Sciences, Fine Art and Education and organizations such as the Australian Museum and Royal Botanic Gardens.

I am currently principal supervisor for 6 Masters and 2 PhD students and co-supervisor for 4 Masters and 1 PhD students.
