This course extends on concepts introduced in first year mechanics (GENG1001) to provide a solid foundation on the dynamics of rigid bodies. An introduction to modelling the dynamics of discrete mechanical systems is also provided, with a focus on understanding the physical meaning of solutions in terms of mode shapes and natural frequencies of vibrating systems.
Topics include: kinematics and kinetics of planar rigid bodies, an introduction to 3D rigid body dynamics, modelling of dynamic mechanical systems, analytical solutions of linear models, and mode shapes and natural frequencies of multiple degree-of-freedom systems.
|Objectives||This course aims to provide students with the following;
1. A solid understanding of the dynamics of planar rigid body systems.
2. The ability to solve problems as related to the dynamics planar rigid body systems.
3. A basic understanding of the issues involved in three-dimensional rigid body dynamics.
4. The ability to develop dynamic models of simple mechanical systems and apply analytical techniques to examine their motion.
5. Experience in the preparation of documentation in the form of an engineering report.

|Content||1. Kinematics and kinetics of planar rigid bodies (momentum and energy methods).
2. An introduction to three-dimensional rigid body mechanics (3D kinematics, moment of inertia tensors, and Euler’s equations).
3. Modelling of dynamic mechanical systems (including Lagrange formulation).
4. Natural frequency and damping ratio of single degree of freedom linear systems.
5. Mode shapes and natural frequencies of multiple degree-of-freedom linear systems.
