This course provides the theoretical foundations to the nursing care of adults and children across a range of clinical contexts. The gastrointestinal, endocrine and kidney diseases that feature in the clinical scenarios selected for this course are based on Australia's National Health Priority Areas and the impact of these diseases on morbidity and mortality. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health; qualitative research; relevant legal principles; and ethical concepts are integral to this course.
This course is a Compulsory Program Component and students must pass in order to progress in the Bachelor of Nursing program

| Content | Theme 1 - Professional Practice Successful completion of this module will enable you to: * demonstrate understanding of the relevant aspects of common law and legislation relating to professional accountability, negligence and professional misconduct * explore the ethical concepts of beneficence and non maleficence using Socratic dialogue Theme 2- Critical thinking and analysis Successful completion of this module will enable you to: * outline the epidemiology, risk factors and pathophysiology of colorectal cancer, gastroenteritis, liver disease, diabetes and kidney failure, and the associated co-morbidities * discuss the psychosocial impact of these diseases on the client, their family and their community * demonstrate an understanding of common types of qualitative research designs Theme 3- Provision and coordination of care Successful completion of this module will enable you to: * use the clinical reasoning cycle to explore selected clinical scenarios * identify a range of techniques, including observation, interview, physical and mental health assessment appropriate to comprehensive nursing assessment and undertaking a patient history Theme 4 - Collaborative and therapeutic practice Successful completion of this module will enable you to: * apply a quality use of medicines framework to selected gastrointestinal, endocrine, and kidney diseases * demonstrate therapeutic communication when supporting individuals dealing with grief, loss and bereavement. |
