This course provides the clinical foundations to the care of adults and children across a range of contexts. This includes a two-week medical surgical placement and a two-week mental health or aged care placement.
This course is a Compulsory Program Component and students must pass in order to progress in the Bachelor of Nursing program

| Content | This course addresses concepts in medical surgical and either health and illness in the older person or mental health professional practice. Theme 1 - Professional Practice Students who successfully complete this course will have demonstrated that they: * practice in accordance with legal, professional and ethical nursing frameworks * perform nursing interventions in accordance with recognised standards of practice * practice in a culturally safe manner through the sensitive and supportive identification of cultural issues Theme 2 - Critical thinking and analysis Students who successfully complete this course will have demonstrated that they: * practice within an evidence based framework * critically reflect on their own nursing practice and identify professional development needs Theme 3 - Provision and coordination of care Students who successfully complete this course will have demonstrated that they: * use the clinical reasoning cycle as a structured approach to client care * use an evidence-based assessment framework to collect data about the physical, socio-cultural and mental health of individuals * provide comprehensive, safe, effective and evidence based nursing care to achieve identified health outcomes and goals * respond to patient deterioration rapidly and appropriately Theme 4 - Collaborative and therapeutic practice Students who successfully complete this course will have demonstrated that they: * are committed to person-centred care * establish therapeutic relationships while maintaining professional boundaries * communicate in a written form that is comprehensive, logical, clear and concise, with accurate spelling and only acceptable abbreviations used * use verbal and electronic communication skills effectively * use relevant principles to ensure the safe administration of medications * use ergonomic principles to prevent injury and promote client comfort * adhere to occupational health and safety legislation. |
