This course provides the clinical foundations to the care of adults and children across a range of contexts. This includes a two-week medical surgical placement and a two-week mental health or aged care placement.

This course is a Compulsory Program Component and students must pass in order to progress in the Bachelor of Nursing program

Objectives Students who successfully complete this course will have demonstrated knowledge, skills and understanding integral to:
* Professional practice
* Critical thinking and analysis
* Provision and coordination of care
* Collaborative and therapeutic practice
Content This course addresses concepts in medical surgical and either health and illness in the older person or mental health professional practice.

Theme 1 - Professional Practice
Students who successfully complete this course will have demonstrated that they:
* practice in accordance with legal, professional and ethical nursing frameworks
* perform nursing interventions in accordance with recognised standards of practice
* practice in a culturally safe manner through the sensitive and supportive identification of cultural issues

Theme 2 - Critical thinking and analysis
Students who successfully complete this course will have demonstrated that they:
* practice within an evidence based framework
* critically reflect on their own nursing practice and identify professional development needs

Theme 3 - Provision and coordination of care
Students who successfully complete this course will have demonstrated that they:
* use the clinical reasoning cycle as a structured approach to client care
* use an evidence-based assessment framework to collect data about the physical, socio-cultural and mental health of individuals
* provide comprehensive, safe, effective and evidence based nursing care to achieve identified health outcomes and goals
* respond to patient deterioration rapidly and appropriately

Theme 4 - Collaborative and therapeutic practice
Students who successfully complete this course will have demonstrated that they:
* are committed to person-centred care
* establish therapeutic relationships while maintaining professional boundaries
* communicate in a written form that is comprehensive, logical, clear and concise, with accurate spelling and only acceptable abbreviations used
* use verbal and electronic communication skills effectively
* use relevant principles to ensure the safe administration of medications
* use ergonomic principles to prevent injury and promote client comfort
* adhere to occupational health and safety legislation.

Labratory COMPULSORY COURSE COMPONENT
100% attendance and satisfactory performance is required in Clinical Laboratories. Attendance is essential preparation for clinical practice and provides relevant clinical skills and knowledge.
Students may be given the opportunity for a makeup laboratory if an adverse circumstances form is submitted and approved by the course coordinator.

Failure to attend 100% of clinical labs will result in either cancellation or delay in clinical placement.

Practicum/Placement COMPULSORY COURSE COMPONENT:

Students must pass this component in order to pass the course

Clinical placement attendance provides opportunities for the development of patient assessment and management skills. Satisfactory performance provides evidence of skills achievement. Failure to attend or to demonstrate satisfactory performance will result in a FF grade for this course.

A student whose performance is either unsafe or unprofessional will be given an FF grade for this course.

Students assessed with unsatisfactory performance from clinical placement will be referred to the Clinical Committee who will advise if remediation and a makeup placement is to be offered.

Evidence of satisfactory placement attendance is a requirement. If any clinical placement hours are missed students must submit an adverse circumstances form and if approved by the course coordinator make-up placement time will be allocated. Satisfactory clinical performance and mastery of core skills must be achieved for a pass or higher grade within this course.

Compulsory Course Component COMPULSORY COURSE COMPONENT

Students must pass this component in order to pass the course

To be awarded a pass or higher grade in this course each student is required to:
• Submit all assessment items; and
• Gain an aggregate of 50% or higher for assessment items
• Complete the required clinical laboratory preparation as outlined in the Clinical Laboratory Workbooks
• Complete the total number of laboratory hours and demonstrate satisfactory performance
• Complete the satisfactory number of clinical placement hours and provide evidence of attendance
• Provide evidence of satisfactory performance (Clinical Summary forms)
• Achieve mastery of the core skills as listed in the course outline
