This course provides the theoretical foundations to the management of the care of adults and children across a range of clinical contexts. The cardiovascular and respiratory diseases that feature in the clinical scenarios selected for this course are based on Australia's National Health Priorities and the impact of these diseases on morbidity and mortality. Preventable risk factors and the related health promotion strategies are addressed. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, quantitative research, relevant legal principles, and ethical concepts are integral to this course.

This course is a Compulsory Program Component and students must pass in order to progress in the Bachelor of Nursing program

Objectives Students who successfully complete this course will have demonstrated knowledge, skills and understanding integral to:

* Collaborative and therapeutic practice
Content Module 1 - Professional practice
Successful completion of this module will enable you to:
* demonstrate understanding of the relevant common law and legislation relating to valid refusal of treatment, futile and burdensome treatment, withholding and withdrawing treatment, and end-of-life care planning
* explore the ethical concept of 'quality of life' using Socratic dialogue

Module 2 - Critical thinking and analysis
Successful completion of this module will enable you to:
* outline the epidemiology, risk factors and pathophysiology of selected cardiovascular, cerebrovascular , cerebrovascular and respiratory diseases and the associated co-morbidities
* identify the psychosocial impact of these diseases on the client, their family and their community
* critically appraise examples of quantitative research related to cardiovascular , cerebrovascular and respiratory diseases

Module 3 - Provision and coordination of care
Successful completion of this module will enable you to:
* use the clinical reasoning cycle to explore selected clinical scenarios
* use a structured evidence-based assessment framework in collecting data about the physical, socio-cultural and mental health of individuals with selected cardiovascular, cerebrovascular and respiratory illnesses

Module 4 - Collaborative and therapeutic practice
Successful completion of this module will enable you to:
* apply a quality use of medicines framework to selected cardiovascular, cerebrovascular and respiratory diseases
* discuss the role of primary health care in the prevention of cardiovascular, cerebrovascular and respiratory illnesses
* identify and discuss multidisciplinary approaches to rehabilitative care of cardiovascular, cerebrovascular and respiratory health breakdown.

Transition NURS2296 will be offered online in 2012 and 2013 for part time students and those who fail and need to repeat.
