Injury is the principal cause of death in people under 45, a leading cause of mortality, morbidity and permanent disability in Australia, and a major source of health care costs. This course provides the theoretical foundations to the prevention and management of injury in adults and children as well as the principles and practices of disaster management. Clinical scenarios focused on road accidents, burns, poisoning, farm injuries, falls and other occupational hazards and natural and environmental disasters are explored. The principles of triage and the nursing responses required in acute clinical situations such as haemodynamic and septic shock, head injury, spinal injury and mental health emergencies are addressed. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health; qualitative and quantitative research; relevant legal principles; and ethical concepts are integral to this course.
This course is a Compulsory Program Component and students must pass in order to progress in the Bachelor of Nursing program

| Content | Module 1 - Professional Practice Successful completion of this module will enable you to: * demonstrate understanding of the legal principles relating to relevant aspects of the NSW Human Tissue Act (1983) * explore the ethical concepts of justice using Socratic dialogue Module 2 - Critical thinking and analysis Successful completion of this module will enable you to: * outline the epidemiology and risk factors for selected injuries including road accidents, accidental and intentional poisoning, occupational hazards and farm injuries * identify the increased risk of co-morbid mental illness (including post traumatic stress disorder) when a person experiences a catastrophic physical events outline the pathophysiology of different types of shock, burns,head and spinal injuries * use relevant examples of qualitative and qualitative research to support your learning and clinical practice. Module 3- Provision and coordination of care Successful completion of this module will enable you to: * use the clinical reasoning cycle to explore selected clinical scenarios * discuss cognitive errors as a factor in adverse client outcomes * use a structured evidence-based assessment framework in collecting data about the physical, socio-cultural and mental health of individuals with selected injuries, haemodynamic and septic shock, burns,head or spinal injuries * identify appropriate and evidence based nursing care for the achievement of health outcomes and goals * identify how to respond to haemodynamic and neurological deterioration rapidly and appropriately * discuss health promotion and patient education related to selected scenarios. Module 4 - Collaborative and therapeutic practice Successful completion of this module will enable you to: * apply a quality use of medicines framework to haemodynamic and septic shock, burns,head and spinal injuries * demonstrate skills in multiprofessional communication * demonstrate therapeutic communication skills when supporting individuals dealing with grief, loss and bereavement. * identify how to access appropriate supportive counselling for both individuals who have experienced a serious trauma and their carers/ families * identify evidence-based treatment options for a person experiencing post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a result of major trauma. |
