This course will enable students to undertake a project related to nursing or midwifery in a topic of individual interest. The project will entail following one of two Strands -
Strand A: an integrative review of the literature; or
Strand B: a cultural study tour, or an international/rural/remote volunteer health care experience of at least two weeks duration (full time).
| Objectives | Strand A (Literature Review) As a result of engaging in this course students will be able to: • Identify and articulate clinically relevant nursing research questions • Develop effective database searching skills • Develop and conduct a database search strategy • Explain the nature and purpose of the integrative literature review • Appraise a range of different qualitative and quantitative research • articles • Develop familiarity with number of the Critical Appraisal Tools (CATs) • currently used in health research evaluation • Plan and write an integrative literature review • Present review findings verbally to an audience Strand B (Cultural Study Tour or International/rural/remote Health Care Experience) As a result of engaging in this course students will be able to: • Reflect upon and situate health practices within the specific health care system, cultural entity, social or community group studied. • Demonstrate, through enquiry-based methods, an ability to explain events, practical applications and achieved outcomes relevant to health within the system, culture or group studied. • Critically analyse professional practices in terms of transferability to other similar social and/or community health situations. • Demonstrate ability to communicate effectively using verbal and written language skills. • Discuss health within the selected health context using relevant concepts of health, models of health care, determinants of health (social and biomedical) and health promotion/health breakdown prevention. |

Objectives and learning outcomes will be negotiated between the student and their academic supervisor at the beginning of the semester. Strand B (Cultural Study Tour or International/rural/remote Health Care Experience) ? Health care systems, cultural entity, social or community group ? Working as a volunteer or participating in a study tour. ? Investigating similarities and differences in social and cultural groups. ? Investigating similarities and differences in health care systems and health issues in populations. ? Communication knowledge and skills in participation within social groups and gathering of information. ? Enquiry-based methods to support strategies of reflection, critical analysis and evaluation. ? Reviewing relevant standards, concepts of health, models of health care, and determinants of health and health promotion/health breakdown prevention within selected health contexts |
