This is the capstone course for Bachelor of Nursing and Bachelor of Midwifery students. The course requires students to integrate and apply the knowledge, concepts and skills associated with their entire sequence of undergraduate study. This course comprises six hours of on-campus teaching followed by an extended clinical placement in one of a range of contexts in which students are required to demonstrate their ability to practice at the level of a competent beginning registered nurse or midwife. Clinical placement hours differ based on the regulatory requirements of nursing and midwifery. Transition to the role of registered nurse/midwife, clinical competence and safety and quality in health care are the primary focus of this course. There are learning outcomes for both nursing and midwifery students that are relevant to the discipline specific competency statements and context of practice.

This course is a Compulsory Program Component and students must pass in order to progress in the Bachelor of Nursing and Bachelor Midwifery programs

Objectives Students who successfully complete this course will to be able to:
* Demonstrate competence to practice according to the Australia Nursing and Midwifery Council's National Competency Standards for the Registered Nurse or Registered Midwife
* Demonstrate effective clinical reasoning skills
* Reflect on and learn from clinical practice experiences
* Participate in quality improvement, clinical audits and risk management activities
* Prepare for employment including maintaining a portfolio as evidence of ongoing professional development activities
* Identify and use appropriate personal strategies and support networks to manage the stress inherent in professional practice.
* Communicate appropriately and contribute effectively as a member of the interdisciplinary health care team
Content In this course, students are required to demonstrate competent practice as defined by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council National Competency Standards for the Registered Nurse.

Transition Students enrolled in the current BN program will undertake NURS3210 instead of NURS3274 from 2013 onwards.
