This course has been developed for Registered Nurses, particularly those who wish to become child and family health nurses, and others who wish to broaden their understanding of the physical, emotional and psychological changes and challenges that occur during pregnancy and birth, and how the family adjusts to the presence of the newborn infant. Knowledge of pregnancy, birth and its outcomes are integral to the practice of nurses working with children and their families in today's society. The course is designed using the principles of problem-based learning.
|Objectives||Completion of this course will enable the student to:
1. Demonstrate the application of a partnership approach to a pregnant mother and her family;
2. Utilise evidence based practice to explore the physical, social and emotional changes that occur during each trimester of pregnancy and then identify and critique possible nursing responses;
3. Demonstrate an understanding of pregnancy and birth and the impact they have on a woman and her family;
4. Demonstrate the application of theoretical knowledge of pregnancy and birth to ethically and legally justifiable, safe and effective practice; and
5. Reflect on, and critically analyse issues impacting on the ongoing care of the woman and newborn.
|Content||Problem based learning principles are applied to clinical scenarios in pregnancy, birth and the family to facilitate learning about:
1. Preconception, conception and early pregnancy
2. Models of care, physiological and psychosocial considerations in pregnancy
3. The process of labour and birth
4. Post natal events, issues and the family.
|Assumed Knowledge||Foundations of nursing knowledge, nursing theory legal and ethical issues, fundamentals of research, human bioscience, psychology and sociology as related to practice. Principles of investigative approaches in nursing, concepts and theories relevant to practice, contemporary nursing issues. Academic reading and writing skills, ability to access and evaluate information from a variety of sources, skills in critical analysis, critical judgement, synthesis and evaluation. Ability to conceptualise practice. Demonstrated ANCI competencies.|
