This course integrates knowledge of permanent tooth morphology, pulpal physiology and clinical radiology with cavity design, restorative techniques and dental materials. Child psychology and behaviour management techniques will be considered. Students will participate in clinical and non-clinical teaching and will be required to keep a clinical portfolio.
This course is a mandatory program component and students must pass in order to progress.
| Objectives | On completion of this course, you will be able to: 1. Use different diagnostic methods, including intra- and extra-oral radiography, to identify anatomical features and detect hard and soft tissue pathology 2. Understand the influence of tooth morphology on restorative techniques 3. Understand the factors involved with provision of clinical restorative care for children 4. Recognise active caries and provide a preventive package of care for children 5. Demonstrate a detailed knowledge of the principles of management of the different types of carious lesions in the permanent dentition in conjunction with a thorough understanding of cavity design, classification, and pulpal protection 6. Understand the principles and techniques for assessing pulp vitality, the pulpal response to the deep carious lesion and the management of pulpal exposures in the permanent dentition. 7. Describe the design, function and mode of action of hand and rotary instruments and understand the principles of hard tissue and dental caries removal using slow and high speed rotary and hand instrumentation 8. Describe in detail dentine bonding agents, lining, base and restorative materials in relation to their contents, properties, handling and uses 9. Appreciate the factors influencing the selection of materials for the restoration of teeth 10. Have knowledge of how to interpret a treatment plan and manage dental treatment 11. Understand the need for finishing restorations and the techniques available 12. Understand the principles of advanced restorative procedures |
