This course integrates knowledge of primary tooth morphology, pulpal physiology and clinical radiology with cavity design, restorative techniques and dental materials. This course builds on child psychology and behaviour management skills to an advanced level to enable students to provide clinical restorative treatment to young children. Students will participate in clinical and non-clinical teaching and will be required to keep a clinical portfolio.

This course is a mandatory program component and students must pass in order to progress.

Objectives On completion of this course, you will be able to:

1. Have knowledge and skills required for understanding the development and behavioural management of the young child patient
2. Understand the influence of tooth morphology on restorative techniques in the primary dentition
3. Demonstrate a detailed knowledge of the principles of management of the different types of carious lesions in the primary dentition
4. Understand the principles of hard tissue and dental caries removal using slow and high speed instrumentation and hand instrumentation in the primary dentition
5. Demonstrate a thorough understanding of cavity design and classification, and pulp protection for the primary dentition
6. Describe in detail the lining and restorative materials in relation to their contents, properties, handling and uses
7. Have the knowledge to manage trauma and dental injuries in the primary and permanent dentition 8. Have knowledge of disorders associated with dental exfoliation and eruption
9. Appreciate the factors influencing the selection of materials for the restoration of the primary tooth
10. Understand the principles and techniques for assessing pulp vitality and the management of deep carious lesions and pulpal exposures in the primary dentition.
11. Have the knowledge and skills required to undertake pulp therapy in primary teeth and placement of stainless steel crowns on primary molars
12. Have knowledge and skills for managing special needs children and adolescents
13. Have a knowledge of classification of occlusion and an understanding of abnormalities of occlusion
Content This course will contain fundamentals of:
1. Child development, psychology and behaviour management
2. Primary tooth morphology in relation to cavity design
3. Pulpal physiology
4. Clinical radiology and interpretation of radiographs
5. Dental material science
6. Management of the carious lesion in the primary dentition
7. Management of pulpal pathology
8. Restoration of the primary dentition (including placement of stainless steel crowns)
9. Tooth isolation and moisture control in relation to tooth restoration
10. Hand and rotary instrumentation for restorative procedures
11. Management of dental trauma

Case Studies Case Study (assesses objectives 1-13) worth 40%
Clinical Continuous clinical assessment (assesses objectives 1-13) - This will comprise assessment by clinical tutors and a reflective portfolio containing evidence of competency of practice worth 20%.
Examination: Formal Short answer paper (assesses objectives 1-13) in the examination period.
Practical Pre-clinical Exam - This is a three hour barrier examination and students will be required to pass this examination prior to commencement of clinical patient care.
