Considers aspects of pharmacy practice including a systematic review of over the counter medicines and complementary medicines. The course consolidates the principles of medication management and provides opportunities for a number of experiential placements which further develops the clinical and practice competencies of the student.

This course is a Compulsory Program Component and must be passed in order to progress in the Master of Pharmacy.

Programs generally have defined periods for their professional education placements. These are based on negotiations between health providers and the University. Students are asked to note however, that placements may occur at any time during the calendar year and not just within defined placement periods or university terms. The timing of your placement will depend largely on the availability of placement opportunities within health services sector. Students MUST NOT organise their own placements without prior approval by the Program Convenor.

Objectives

Students should:
1. Develop skills in the proper use of over the counter products, and advice on non-drug treatment options in Pharmacy Practice.
2. Develop advanced communication skills in relation to Pharmacy Practice.
3. Further develop skills on medication management with the aim of optimising health outcomes.
4. Develop competency in dispensing including patient counselling and extemporaneous dispensing.
5. Develop an understanding of health professions and their integration with the practice of pharmacy.

Content

1. The concept of minor illness and major disease and the use of OTC products, including Complementary Medicines
2. The use of OTC products for treatment of:
- ophthalmic disorders such as conjuctivitis, blepharitis, dry eyes
- ear conditions
3. Dispensing skill development, including extemporaneous dispensing and patient counselling
4. Clinical skills development in Medication Management
5. Visits to hospital and community pharmacies and health care units
6. Nutraceuticals.
7. Management of wounds.
8. Management of continence.

Transition

This course will be taught for the first time in 2009. Students who are required to repeat PHAR6014 will be provided with specific lectures, tutorials and self directed learning material by both didactic and on-line modes of delivery.

Assessment Items

Examination: Oral	Oral examinations/OSCE's
Examination: Formal	Written examination (May comprise True/False, multiple choice and short answer questions, calculations, case study scenarios). Practical examination incorporating OSCE/oral examination.
Other: (please specify)	Each examination component will test a student's competency in one or more of the course objectives since these form part of the core competencies required of a pharmacist. To be awarded a pass mark or better for the course, a student must show they are competent in the course objectives by achieving a satisfactory grade in the final examination components (written, practical and oral/OSCE) and all other assessment items. Students must satisfactorily complete the placement during this course. This will be determined by satisfactory completion of a placement workbook, reflective journal and preceptor appraisals. Students must demonstrate competency in both theoretical knowledge & laboratory skills which form part of the core competencies required of a pharmacist.
