The course PSYC3700 is part of the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council's accredited sequence and is a core course in the BPsych.
It builds on basic knowledge of developmental psychology and psychopathology covered in PSYC1010 and provides in depth coverage of basic principles and theories of physical, cognitive, social and personality changes that occur across the lifespan,
as well as specialised topics in these areas.
The course implements the developmental psychopathology framework to help demonstrate the complex interaction of factors that affect both typical and atypical development. It covers issues in diagnosis and classification of childhood and adolescent mental disorders. It introduces methodological and ethical issues specific to research with children, and provides basic training in assessing and studying children.
| Objectives | This course will: 1. provide an introduction to the science of studying developmental psychology; 2. provide an overview of the basic principles and theories that describe the physical, cognitive, social and personality changes that occur during various developmental periods. 3. develop critical abilities in the application of the theoretical assumptions of developmental psychology. 4. provide training in the conduct of systematic observation and recording of child, adolescent and adult behaviour; 5. provide training in the administration, scoring and interpretation of indices of cognitive and social development, which emphasises the importance of designing developmentally appropriate tests and of making valid conclusions on the basis of those tests; |

| Content | This course will generally: * Examine the important changes in physical, cognitive, social and emotional processes that occur over the lifespan. * Examine cognition development related of course to physical change, * Review the theoretical explanations of such changes * Introduce methods for studying development at different stage of life. * Examine social development, including the development of early attachments, the social changes that take place in adolescence and the important relationships likely to occur in adulthood. * Provide an understanding of human development in a variety of contexts: at school, in the family and in relationships with other people. |
