This course forms part of an Australian Psychological Society accredited sequence.
One half of the course introduces students to the administration of psychological tests and psychological assessment with an emphasis on cognitive testing and assessment. The other half of the course introduces students to basic counselling techniques and skills. Students will gain practical experience in testing and counselling.
Students CANNOT take PSYC4201 with ANY of the following courses:
PSYC4070, PSYC4080, PSYC4110, PSYC4210, or PSYC6720.
| Objectives | On successful completion of this course, students will have: 1. Gained useful knowledge regarding psychological tests in various areas of cognition; 2. Gained useful knowledge regarding the choice of suitable tests, and matching this choice with assessment goals; 3. Gained useful knowledge regarding the different approaches to counselling and how to conduct a counselling interview. 4. Developed competency in the administration, scoring and interpretation of psychological tests, 5. Developed competency in basic counselling skills and techniques. |

| Content | The Wechlser tests of intelligence and memory will be examined as well as commonly used tests of attention and executive function. The course will also address important issues in choosing appropriate tests to achieve the assessment goals and interpreting and using test results. The counselling component will examine a number of approaches to counselling and cover the range of skills needed to conduct a counselling interview. |
