Foundations of Liturgical Practice

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the origins and development of the Roman liturgy leading to the significant reforms of Second Vatican Council. It introduces students to the meaning and theology of liturgy. Key documents underpinning the reform and celebration of the liturgy will be considered. Contemporary questions related to liturgy and worship will be explored.

Objectives Upon completion of this course, students will be expected to:

1. Demonstrate an awareness of origin and development of the Roman liturgy;
2. Articulate an understanding of, and appreciation for, liturgy;
3. Examine the Vatican II liturgical reform and its reception;
4. Read and apply key liturgical questions and issues.
Content Themes will include:
Definitions of liturgy, ritual and symbol
Significance of liturgical history
Importance of primary source material & liturgical texts
Connection between liturgy & life: spirituality, justice, mission
Preparation of liturgy
Implications of contemporary issues
