2010 Memorial John McPhee Seminar: "Extreme Prematurity - How Low Should We Go?"Aggressive resuscitation of extremely premature neonates saves lives, but many of the survivors are significantly disabled. The emotional and financial cost to families and to the community may be high. So can we draw a line? Who draws the line? And does legal protection exist for doctors who decide, on medical or other grounds or at the parent’s request, to withhold or limit resuscitation measures?

Carbon Valley 2050Carbon Valley 2050 explores, at a regional level, the question of what kind of sustainable future should be our aspirational goal. Carbon Valley 2050 is an umbrella concept, to catalyse thinking, to develop technologies, grow new businesses, assist existing businesses based on clean energy sources and renewable resources. Presentations will be given by Conjoint Professor Joe Herbertson AM, (TFI Board) and Dr Gary Ellem, (Carbon Valley 2050 Project Manager). Followed by a panel session with representatives from the energy and coal industries, and the innovation and sustainability sectors, including Dr Alan Broadfoot - Director Newcastle Institute for Energy and Resources, NIER, Todd Williams - CEO RDA Hunter, and Neville Sawyer - Chair, Hunter Central Coast Innovation Festival 2010. Join us for a lively discussion on the way forward for the 21st century.

From "Sicut" to "Turbato": Popes and Jews in the Central Middle Ages" A re-AssessmentThis paper will consider the mutual dependence of the papacy and Jews in the central middle ages. The pogroms which marked the early crusading movement and there were increasing restrictions and persecutions in the later middle ages, but it has been argued that the twelfth century was a time or relative calm. Dr Rist, an authority on medieval Jewry, weighs the evidence on this troubled past.
