In addition to the many research scholarships and awards available to students at the University of Newcastle, the Faculty has in place a range of scholarships for student researchers at every level:

Faculty Undergraduate Summer Scholarships
(2011/12 applications closed 7 October 2011)
The Faculty of Science and IT Undergraduate Summer Scholarship program is established to enable talented students to explore the world of research.
An Undergraduate Summer research program can be undertaken in a variety of research areas and will provide students with a valuable and rewarding experience working with well-established researchers in high quality research environments.Scholarship holders will undertake research projects over a 6-week placement.
This program is an early introduction to aspects of Honours Year research. Details regarding the current topics identified as being of interest to the Faculty are now available.
A large number of scholarships are available valued at $2,000 each, with further information available in the Summer Scholarships 2011/12 information brochure. For information on the conditions and how to apply please refer to the Scholarships website.
Faculty Undergraduate Visiting Scholarships
(2011/12 applications closed 7 October 2011)
The Faculty of Science and IT Undergraduate Visiting Scholarship program is established to enable talented students from other universities to explore the world of research. Scholarship holders will undertake research projects over a 6-week placement at the University of Newcastle during summer.
An Undergraduate Visiting research program can be undertaken in a variety of research areas and will provide students with a valuable and rewarding experience working with well-established researchers in high quality research environments. This program is an early introduction to aspects of Honours Year research. Details regarding the current topics identified as being of interest to the Faculty are now available.
The scholarship includes a $2,000 stipend, 6 weeks accommodation if required and return transportation within Australia, plus assistance with local resources. Medical Physics Research Scholarship/Visiting Summer Scholarship (2011/12 applications close 29 October 2011)
An opportunity exists to participate in research from December 2011 to February 2012 in the rewarding area of Medical Physics. Your research will take place within the Radiation Oncology Department, Calvary Mater Hospital Newcastle; and applicants will have a chance to make a positive contribution to the cancer care health environment.
There are three (3) scholarships of $5000 available, which includes travel and accommodation costs.
These scholarships are open to Australian citizens currently studying an undergraduate (Years 2 or 3), an Honours or Masters degree focused on physics, mathematics or medical radiation science at any Australian University.

Faculty Honours Scholarships
(2012 applications closing date extended to 24 October 2011)
The Faculty of Science and IT Honours Scholarship is established to encourage and support undergraduate students entering an Honours program with the aim of progressing to a Research Higher Degree offered by the Faculty of Science and Information Technology.
An Honours program can be undertaken in a variety of research areas and will provide students with the necessary experience and knowledge working closely with well-established researchers in high quality research environments. Details regarding the current topics identified as being of interest to the Faculty are now available.
A large number of scholarships are available for students commencing in Semester 1, 2012. The scholarships are valued at $2,000 each, with further information available in the Honours Scholarships 2012 information brochure. Faculty Research Training Scholarships (Honours and Provisional RHD)
(2012 applications closing date extended to 24 October 2011)
The Faculty of Science & IT has established a new Research Training Scholarship to encourage and support students entering an Honours program in Semester 1 2012 and who progress to enrol in a Master of Philosophy or Doctor of Philosophy in 2013 offered by the Faculty of Science and IT.
In 2012, the Faculty will award up to twenty (20) Research Training Scholarships which consists of:

An Honours scholarship of $2,000 per student, awarded in two payments of $1,000 to be paid each semester after the HECS census date in 2012.

A Provisional offer of UNRSC (PUNRSC - Provisional University of Newcastle Research Scholarship Central) for 2013, subject to the student achieving Honours Class One and supervision and resources being available to support the proposed research.

Faculty Indigenous Postgraduate Research Award
(2012 applications close 7 October 2011)
The Faculty of Science and IT Indigenous Postgraduate Research Award is available to an RHD candidate undertaking a full-time research Master's or PhD degree within the Faculty of Science and Information Technology. The applicant must be an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander and an Australian Citizen.
The successful applicant will receive a living allowance (AUD$22,500 per annum in 2011) for the duration of the scholarship. This period is three (3) years for a PhD degree or two (2) years for a Master's degree by research. Please see information about the current topics identified as being of interest to the Faculty. Faculty RHD Conference Scholarships
The Research Higher Degree Student Conference Scholarship provides Faculty support for Master of Philosophy by Research or PhD candidates of the Faculty to participate in an International Conference/Exhibition in order to present their research to the international community. Only one Scholarship will be awarded to any one applicant during the term of their candidature, and will not be awarded to candidates retrospectively.
The Scholarship is restricted to Conferences/Exhibitions, which are organized by an International Committee (whether in Australia or Overseas). The applicant should have authored, co-authored a refereed scientific article(s) or exhibited at a significant venue (solo or group). The Faculty Research and Research Training Committee views these Scholarships as being prestigious, so its award should be included on the testamur and could be used in student Curriculum Vitae's.
