ARTIST AS…
The 2009 UoN Services Ltd. Annual Student Art Prize
Curated by Caelli Jo Brooker
27 August - 13 September 2009
The Artists:
Current students of the University of Newcastle
have been invited to submit new works that respond to the theme of the 2009 UoN Services Ltd Annual Student Art Prize: Artist As…
The Theme
Artist As… asks exhibitors to question the role of the Artist. The Theme requires exhibitors to articulate the place of the artist in society as they see it.
The Prizes
Last year saw the expansion of the main prize to become a travelling scholarship and in 2009,
the ASAP Travelling Scholarship, now increased to $1500, will be awarded to the overall winner.
Three Highly Commended Awards worth $500 each and an Encouragement Award
of $300 will also be awarded on the opening night.
Formerly an acquisitive prize, the Annual Student Art Prize has now become non-acquisitive.
These prizes have been made possible through the continued support of UoN Services Limited,
who have once again, generously donated $2,500 towards the Prize. FordComm have continued their patronage for the third year running with a further $500 and Sign-A-Rama have once again donated $300.
The Judges
This year two artists Nell and Peter Gardiner have been asked to judge the prize.
Nell is a significant Sydney artist with works in major public and private collections who has recently received a New Work Grant from the Australia Council and has been awarded residencies in Paris and Rome. Peter Gardiner is the winner of the 2008 Muswellbrook Open Art Prize and was recently granted an Australia Council residency in Barcelona. Both artists have strong ties to the Hunter region.
The Sponsors
Many thanks to our generous financial sponsors - UoN Services Limited, FordComm, Sign-A-Rama
and also to Rosnay Organic Wines for wines on opening night.
