Why study with us?

If you are looking to gain an informed insight into the oldest continuing living culture in the world and translate this knowledge into gainful employment in Indigenous affairs and make a difference, then the Institute's Bachelor of Aboriginal Professional Practice degree is for you.  As well as the Bachelor of Aboriginal Professional Practice program the Institute also offers a comprehensive range of Aboriginal studies courses which are available to students studying in various disciplines across the University.

Aboriginal Professional Practice is purposely designed to provide work ready, strong culturally secured and social advocate professionals across a diverse professional field of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal graduates, to a broad career market in Aboriginal affairs, Aboriginal agencies, businesses and industries targeting Aboriginal professional staff and/or professionally qualified staff to work effectively with Aboriginal communities/clients. All this, in a dynamic degree that has been developed in response to the Aboriginal community and the need to meet current and future professional career markets.   All this in a degree that has been fashioned by the Aboriginal Community and delivered by highly qualified and experienced Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander lecturers.

Aboriginal education is an integral part of the University's priority plans and the results are proving that the University is a leader in this field with a well established research centre, Umulliko Indigenous Higher Education Research Centre, leading Indigenous academics in education, history and policy, as well as being recently  surveyed as the top University by choice by Aboriginal students.

The degree provides a broad base of both traditional and contemporary Aboriginal background and integrates these into critical skills development and knowledge in public policy, human rights, history and community development skills. Key areas of health, housing, education and social justice provide invaluable working insight into the complexity of contemporary Aboriginal practice.

Umulliko Indigenous Higher Education Research Centre provides the perfect opportunity for students seeking Honours, in particular the Bachelor of Aboriginal Studies (Hons) program, as well as post-graduate programs in Masters and Doctoral studies to follow their undergraduate degree.
