Resources

Expand your ideas

However big or small you think your work might be the committee is interested to learn more about it. At each meeting we invite staff to present their work, whether as an idea to progress, a report from a conference presentation or to seek feedback on research activity. Please contact Robyn Smyth or Graeme Horton to find out how the committee can assist you.

Draw on existing expertise

The committee members hold a wide range of expertise and can assist you with advice about issues such as writing research proposals, quantitative and qualitative methodologies, preparation of Human Ethics Applications, conferences and journals.

Find a collaborator

The research priorities being considered by the committee focus on teaching and learning within the JMP. These may include innovative strategies being used by staff, implementation of technologies and approaches to teaching.  We would like to expand this list to reflect the interests and strengths of teaching staff within the JMP.  Please contact a member of the committee to discuss your thoughts and ideas about priority areas for further research work.

Current Projects

  • Examination performance among international and culturally and linguistically-diverse (CALD) medical students - A retrospective cohort study of examination results, to examine the relationship between clinical and written examination performance throughout the medical degree program and students' ethnicity. Contact Jo Mesure on Joanna.Mesure@newcastle.edu.au for more information.
  • E-Portfolio - Investigates emerging technologies, specifically e-Portfolio and Pod/Vodcasting in the context of developing the JMP across both institutions. ANZAME abstract by Catherine Studdert
  • CALD project - Explores the experience and needs of culturally and linguistically diverse students, and explores domestic student attitudes to culturally diverse student and patient population groups among Master of Pharmacy, Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Nursing students
  • Peer Review of Teaching PBL - This project explored tutor’s perceptions about a useful and feasible means to evaluate individual’s teaching for improvement, promotion or quality assurance. It showed that there are complex issues involved and that a ‘one-size-all’ approach will not suit all needs. Further work will be undertaken in 2010. Please contact Graeme Horton, Sue Outram or Robyn Smyth for details.
