Selection process
The JMP considers personal qualities to be just as important and influential to the learning and practice of medicine as academic ability. This is reflected in our admission and selection processes.
Each year there is a large number of students applying for the 170 places in the JMP. Our selection process is a way of ensuring these positions are offered to candidates most likely to be successful doctors. We have improved our selection process to allow a more accurate assessment of a candidate's capabilities to learn in an independent environment and to ultimately excel in the field of medicine.
Selection is based on performance in UMAT, the Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) and the Personal Qualities Assessment (PQA). A minimum academic requirement is also required and varies according to background.
The Applicant Assessment Guide contains lots of information about studying, living and travelling to each University. The 2012 guide will be available soon.
Required UMAT score
Applicants will now be required to achieve a threshold score of 50 in each UMAT subtest.
Participation in Multiple-Mini Interviews (MMI)
Applicants who score at higher levels in UMAT Test 1 will be invited to attend interviews in November/December. In 2011 the interviews will consist of a series of stations or mini interviews each assessing a different quality.
There are eight different mini interviews (or stations) in total. Each station will have one room and one interviewer. On occasion may also have a silent observer. A candidate will spend eight minutes at each station. At the eight minute mark the candidate will be asked to leave the room, and wait outside for a two minute break. The interviewers will record their scoring of the candidate during the two minute break. When the two minutes has expired, the candidate will rotate to the next station.
Completion of Personal Qualities Assessment (PQA)
Candidates will also be required to complete an online assessment of personal qualities known at the PQA when they attend for the mini interviews session. The PQA is an online instrument designed to assess a range of personal qualities considered to be important for the study and practice of medicine. Visit www.pqa.net.au for more details.
Changing your preferred enrolment location
The location of your applicant assessment is not an indication of which university you will be enrolled in. However, it is an oppurtunity for you to explore the campus you have been allocated for assessment. You can change your preferred enrolment location by contacting the Dean of Medicine - JMP in writing by 30 November 2012. Requests should be emailed to tracey.bristow@newcastle.edu.au or lrose4@une.edu.au.
Admission offers
Offers of admission and unsuccessful notices will be available online at www.uac.edu.au in January, 2013. Offers of admission to the JMP will state the university, either the University of Newcastle or the University of New England, to which you have been successful in gaining entry.
Requests for transfers between Newcastle and Armidale following commencement of studies at the initial University of enrolment may only be considered on the basis of compelling compassionate circumstances.
