The University of Newcastle's Chancellor, Professor Trevor Waring, has been recognised for his contribution to the city of Newcastle.

The Newcastle Business Club has presented its Annual Award to Professor Waring for his services to psychology and for helping others.

Professor Waring is a clinical psychologist with almost 40 years experience working in the field of mental health.

He is a Conjoint Professor of Psychology at the University of Newcastle; a senior consultant clinical psychologist at the Lakeside Psychiatric Unit of Warners Bay Private Hospital; and a Director of the Australian Psychological Society.

He is also Chair of the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council and Chair of the Hunter New England Health Service's Medical Appointments Advisory Board. He was President of the NSW Psychologists Registration Board and Chair of the National Council of Psychologists Registration Boards for 14 years, retiring in November 2006.

Professor Waring has been in private practice for more than 25 years and was made a member of the Order of Australia in 2004 for his work in mental health and psychology.

Professor Waring took over the role as University of Newcastle Chancellor on 1 May 2004, after being a member of the University Council since 1984, and Deputy Chancellor since 1997. He was reappointed to the role for a four-year term, in March this year.
