Graduate student books place among literary elite

Steve Toltz, a Bachelor of Communication graduate from the University of Newcastle, has been shortlisted for the 2008 Man Booker Prize for Fiction.

Steve Toltz, a Bachelor of Communication graduate from the University of Newcastle, has been shortlisted for the 2008 Man Booker Prize for Fiction.

The Man Booker Prize is one of the world's most prestigious literary awards with the winner receiving prize money of more than $100,000.

Mr Toltz has been nominated for his debut comic novel 'A Fraction of the Whole'. The story tells of the complex relationship between a father and son as they travel from the Australian bush to cafes in Paris and into the Thai jungle.

The winner will be announced at an awards ceremony in London on 14 October.
