Internationally recognised neuroscience researcher, Professor Mike Calford, has been appointed the new Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) at the University of Newcastle.

Following a national search, Professor Calford, who is currently Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University's Faculty of Health, will take up the position in May 2009.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Nicholas Saunders said the role of Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) demanded a complex mix of skills including strategic foresight, business acumen and thorough knowledge of the research and development political environment.

"Professor Calford is well-known and highly respected among Australian and international research communities," Professor Saunders said.

"His excellent reputation is built on 25 years as a leader in neuroscience research and the active role he has played in developing the sector through the National Health and Medical Research Council and other bodies.

"The University is privileged to have someone as accomplished as Professor Calford take up the important position of Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research)."

Professor Calford said an essential part of his new role was to maintain the momentum of the recent expansion of research at the University.

"Newcastle is among the best research institutions in Australia. We have excellent established researchers and a strong group of developing researchers," Professor Calford said.

"I look forward to supporting them through providing opportunities to build on our strengths and by forging new alliances with local and international partners."

Professor Calford holds a Bachelor of Science (Honours) majoring in psychology and genetics, and a Doctor of Philosophy from Monash University.

Prior to joining the University of Newcastle in 2000, he held a number of senior research positions at the Australian National University and the University of Queensland.

Professor Calford replaces Professor Barney Glover as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research). Professor Glover will take up the appointment as Vice-Chancellor of Charles Darwin University.
