Ross Abbs - one of the University of Newcastle's brightest graduates - has won a highly prestigious scholarship to study postgraduate law at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom.
26-year-old Mr Abbs is the first University of Newcastle graduate to win the James Fairfax - Oxford Australia Fund Scholarship. He will now study for the highly esteemed one-year Bachelor of Civil Law (BCL) degree at the University of Oxford.
The University of Newcastle will help support Mr Abbs' study at Oxford by adding $10,000 to the $12,000 scholarship he will receive from the James Fairfax - Oxford Australia Scholarship Fund.
Mr Abbs said the scholarship would provide him with an amazing opportunity to study at one of the world's most famous universities.
"Oxford's BCL is renowned for being a rigorous and challenging course that requires full-time commitment," Mr Abbs said.
"This scholarship will provide invaluable financial support so that I can concentrate on broadening my knowledge of the law."
Mr Abbs graduated from the University of Newcastle with first class honours in a Bachelor of Laws degree in 2006, having also completed a Bachelor of Arts degree with first class honours in 2004. He then worked as an Associate to Justice Michael Kirby of the High Court of Australia.
He recently spent six months working at the Victorian Law Reform Commission and is currently a research assistant to Adjunct Professor Peter Cashman at the University of Sydney.
Mr Abbs will commence his study at the University of Oxford in October this year.
The James Fairfax - Oxford Australia Fund Scholarship is based at the Australian National University and is funded by Australians who have studied at Oxford, in particular Mr James Fairfax.
