John Forbes, a Professor of Surgical Oncology at the University of Newcastle and Calvary Mater Newcastle, has received more than $300,000 for his clinical trials research with the Australian New Zealand Breast Cancer Trials Groups (ANZ BCTG).
The funding, from the Cancer Institute NSW, was announced this morning by the NSW Minister Assisting the Minister for Health (Cancer), Jodi McKay. It is for three key management positions that support the work of the internationally-recognised research team led by Professor Forbes.
The ANZ BCTG conducts national and international trials that are changing clinical practice in breast cancer treatment to create better outcomes for women.
In recent years trials have proven that the drug tamoxifen - an established treatment for breast cancer - can reduce the risk of breast cancer in pre and post-menopausal women at increased risk of the disease.
Professor John Forbes was named one of the top 10 'hottest' researchers in the world in 2005-2006, with his inclusion on the Thomson Scientific 'Hottest Researcher' list.
He conducts research in collaboration with the Hunter Medical Research Institute's Cancer Research Program, and leads a research team, many of whom are graduates of the University of Newcastle.
