Warm welcome for international students

The University of Newcastle will this week recognise the efforts of volunteers who welcome international students into the community through the Community Connections program.

The Community Connections program is vital in helping international students build connections with the local community through language, cultural and social experiences.

Thirty-two new volunteers (individuals and organisations) will receive certificates of participation, including 27 students from the University's international leadership program - iLEAD.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Global Relations), Professor Kevin McConkey, said over the past 11 years, more than 600 volunteers had used their local knowledge and experience to provide invaluable practical support for families new to the Australian culture.

People interested in volunteering for the program should contact Veronica Clayton on 02 4921 2066 or email Veronica.Clayton@newcastle.edu.au.

Picture opportunity: Certificates of participation will be presented to new volunteers at 4.30pm on Tuesday 27 October 2009 at Isabella Restaurant, Callaghan campus.
