The search is on to find the foundation and inscription stone for Macquarie Pier, believed lost for more than 190 years.
The University of Newcastle's Coal River Working Party has embarked on a quest to find the stone laid by Governor Lachlan Macquarie in 1818 at the start of the Newcastle breakwater at Nobbys.
Surveyors from Monteath & Powys will be on site at Macquarie Pier to start ground penetrating radar work to locate the stone at 8am on Tuesday 9 March 2010.
