Prestigious honour for global planner

Global leader in urban planning Mrs Cheong-Chua Koon Hean, has been awarded one of the University of Newcastle’s highest honours.

Global leader in urban planning Mrs Cheong-Chua Koon Hean, has been awarded one of the University of Newcastle’s highest honours.

Founder of the Urban Redevelopment Authority International Group, Mrs Cheong-Chua was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Architecture for her international leadership in the planning sector.

University Chancellor, Professor Trevor Waring, said the University of Newcastle was proud of Mrs Cheong-Chua’s global achievements, which had included leading the way in responsible planning.

Mrs Cheong-Chua graduated from the University of Newcastle in 1981 with a first class honours degree in Architecture and the University Medal in recognition of her outstanding scholarship.

“The influence of Mrs Cheong-Chua’s knowledge and experience in urban planning is clearly evident in her excellent track record, both in Singapore and overseas,” Professor Waring said.

“A highlight of her career has been overseeing the strategic long term Concept Plan and Master Plan for Singapore, including introducing greater sustainability.”

Mrs Cheong-Chua introduced the Architecture and Urban Design Excellence Program, inspiring the Singapore design community to lift standards.

She has also been a driver of major urban transformation projects, which are providing the new signature image of Singapore as a global and distinctive city.

“Mrs Cheong-Chua has shared Singapore’s planning experience with China, the Middle East, India, Africa and many south east Asian countries. The University of Newcastle is delighted to honour a woman of such achievement,” Professor Waring said.

The University of Newcastle staged two graduation ceremonies in Singapore on Monday 22 November. The graduation ceremony for the Faculty of Health, Faculty of Science and Information Technology and Faculty of Education and Arts was staged at 11am at the Singapore Chinese Orchestra Concert Hall.

The graduation ceremonies for the Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment and Faculty of Business and Law was staged at 3.30pm.

Mrs Cheong-Chua Koon Hean was admitted to the degree of Doctor of the Architecture, honoris causa at the 3.30pm event.
