Local students enrolled at the University of Newcastle’s Port Macquarie campus are being encouraged to apply for thousands of dollars worth of financial support available to them.
TAFE students in particular are eligible for one of two scholarships established especially for them to help fund their cross in to higher education worth $1,500 each. The Pathway Scholarships are for TAFE NSW North Coast Institute graduates who are commencing full-time study at the University’s Port Macquarie campus this year.
2011 recipient Kiley Trappett bought a laptop with her money, which she says has proved vital.
“Everything is online now so the laptop is my lifeline. I use it both at home and at Uni.”
Kiley is studying for her Bachelor of Nursing while being a single mum to three children.
“It was great for my kids to see me win the scholarship. They were so excited. It was fantastic to show them that if you put your mind to something, you can do whatever you want.
“I actually went on to win a second scholarship worth $7,000, which was massive. It meant I didn’t have to worry about working part-time and juggling the kids.
“I didn’t think I’d be able to go to Uni. Port is quite small so for someone like me who has children and needs to stay in the area, having these opportunities is brilliant. I would definitely encourage others to apply,” she said.
Jill Horton is studying for a Bachelor of Teaching (Primary) and Bachelor of Arts, and put her money toward fees. She has worked hard, finishing her first year with a swag of high marks.
There are more than 200 scholarships on offer for students such as Kiley and Jill.
As well as the Pathway Scholarships and up to 12 of the $7,000 David Beer Undergraduate Scholarships in Medicine and Nursing, students can apply for funding across a range of degrees and disciplines. There are opportunities for both new and continuing students, and there is no limit to how many scholarships students can apply for.
University of Newcastle Foundation CEO, Louise O’Connell said a lot of scholarships were funded by private donors who wanted to help students succeed in their chosen field.
“I encourage all students attending the University of Newcastle to visit our website and check if you are eligible. Scholarships are so generous and a great opportunity to get a helping hand,” she said.
