University scholarships up for grabs
Students at the University of Newcastle are being urged to apply for a scholarship, which can help ease the financial burden associated with study.
More than 200 scholarships - some worth many thousands of dollars - are available across a wide range of degrees and disciplines, for both new and continuing students.
University of Newcastle Foundation Acting CEO Libby Rodgers-McPhee said a lot of scholarships were funded by community members and organisations that wanted to help students succeed in their chosen field.
“We award scholarships to many students, from high achievers and keen sportspeople to talented musicians. There is also support available for students who are struggling financially and there is no limit to how many scholarships students can apply for,” she said.
Some scholarships provide financial assistance such as the Xstrata Coal Scholarships, which are worth $10,000 each; while others such as the Eric Parker Fellowship provide an opportunity for students to travel overseas.
A scholarship may also help relieve the burden for students facing financial disadvantage or hardship. The Shaping Futures and Godfrey Tanner Scholarships are dedicated to helping disadvantaged students.
The University also offers a number of scholarships to assist Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islanders students with their studies.
Students with sporting abilities can also apply, with dedicated sports scholarships. Scholarships for talented musical students are also available.
2012 scholarship winner and nursing student Savannah Shaw said her Shaping Futures scholarship had helped ease the financial burden of studying and added some balance to her life.
"Receiving this scholarship has allowed me focus more on my studies rather than the two jobs I was previously working. My dream is to work as a nurse looking after children who are fighting cancer."
Students can apply for scholarships via the University of Newcastle’s website at www.newcastle.edu.au/scholarships. Applications for most scholarships are open until 31 March, 2013.
