United nations day honour for national stem challenge
A flagship science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) outreach program has been awarded a prestigious 2022 United Nations Day Honour.
The Science and Engineering Challenge, started by the University of Newcastle in 2000, was recognised by the United Nations Association of Australia in New South Wales for its significant contribution to inspiring young people to pursue tertiary education and careers in STEM.
Our community has been generous in its support for the award-winning program over the years, as highlighted by more than $37,000 being donated at our most recent Gifting Day. Your support has helped to awaken the curiosity, knowledge, capacity and problem-solving skills needed to address global challenges. Receiving the honour in the year designated by the UN as the International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development was a reflection of what can be achieved with the support of our community. Congratulations and heartfelt thanks to all involved.
The University of Newcastle acknowledges the traditional custodians of the lands within our footprint areas: Awabakal, Darkinjung, Biripai, Worimi, Wonnarua, and Eora Nations. We also pay respect to the wisdom of our Elders past and present.
