1.      Context

This Procedure supports the University’s commitment to awarding the University Medal to an outstanding undergraduate student of the University of Newcastle. It should be read in conjunction with the University Medals Guideline 000859.

2.      Procedure

2.1.     The Medals Committee may award the University Medal to any outstanding undergraduate student of the University.

2.2.     A Faculty shall nominate for the consideration of the Medals Committee all undergraduate bachelor degree graduates who have shown exceptional academic merit.  The Faculty shall:

      i.  consider all graduates who have:

(a)    achieved Honours Class 1; or

(b)    where the degree to be conferred has Honours, have achieved Honours;  or

(c)    where the degree to be conferred has no Honours and is awarded with Distinction, has achieved Distinction;

    ii.  identify those candidates who have shown exceptional academic merit demonstrated by:

(a)    qualifying for an Honours Class 1 degree or, where the degree to be conferred has Honours, an Honours degree,

(b)    qualifying for the award of the degree with Distinction where the degree to be conferred does not have Honours;

(c)    completing the degree in not more than two semesters in excess of the standard minimum period (full-time or part-time) required for completion of the degree;

(d)    achieving a minimum overall GPA of 6.5;

(e)    achieving a minimum GPA of 6.5 in the final year of the program; and

(f)     completing at least half of their degree requirements at the University of Newcastle;

 iii.  forward to the Medals Committee for its consideration:

(a)    nominations for the University Medal, accompanied by documentation as set out in the University Medals Guideline

(b)    documentation as set out in the University Medals Guideline for:

  i)     all Honours Class I graduates; or

 ii)     where the degree to be conferred on the graduate has Honours, for all Honours graduates; or

iii)     where there is no Honours available and the degree is conferred with Distinction, for all graduates awarded with Distinction.

iv.  the Medals Committee may vary any of the above criteria.

2.3.     Submissions shall be made to the Medals Committee by 31 January and 31 August in each year. Late submissions will be accepted up until 2 weeks prior to the meeting.

2.4.     The Secretary shall prepare a consolidated report for the Committee from Faculty submissions.

2.5.     The Medals Committee shall examine, consider and review all information provided by the Faculties, and determine the award of Medals.

2.6.     The Medals Committee shall use the following guidelines to assist in its deliberations:

(a)        normally only one Medal will be awarded within each program unless more than one major is available in the program;

(b)        where the two (or more) highest candidates within the one program/discipline are equal in terms of the GPA, the candidate with the greater number of High Distinctions, or, if this does not separate the candidates, the candidate with the greater number of High Distinctions and Distinctions shall be awarded the medal;

(c)        where two (or more) candidates within a program or discipline are of exceptional merit, and are high in rank order within the University and/or the Faculty and cannot be separated, they may each be awarded a Medal.

2.7.     Faculties may award a Faculty Medal or other Faculty-based award to graduates whose achievements, while falling below that required for the award of a University Medal, warrant recognition.
