1.      Context

These Constitution Rules were made by the Council with the approval of a majority of greater than two-thirds of members, in accordance with section 8B of the University of Newcastle Act 1989.

2.      Constitution Rules

(i) the total number of members of the Council is 16,

(ii) the total number of members in each category is:

(a) 3 official members, and

(b) 4 elected members (being 2 academic staff members, 1 non-academic staff member and 1 student member), and

(c) 7 Council appointed members, and

(d) 2 members appointed by the Minister,

(iii) the minimum number of external members who must be graduates of the University is 3. They will become members by appointment by the Council or Minister.

Constitution Rules were brought into force by a Ministerial Order made pursuant to section 4 of the Universities Governing Bodies Act 2011 on 5 September 2012.

Council approved the Constitution Rules by greater than two-thirds majority, as part of its “Opt-In Resolution”, made in accordance with section 4 (1) (b) of the Universities Governing Bodies Act 2011 on 24 August 2012.
